Colours of Futuna Concert Series Concludes with Stellar Performances

The much-anticipated Colours of Futuna Concert Series has now drawn to a close, marking the end of an exceptional array of musical performances that filled the Chapel rafters from 6 April to 15 June this year.

Showcasing a stellar lineup of eleven diverse and captivating performances from local Wellington musicians, the series has been a staple of the Futuna Chapel events programme since 2012.

Futuna Chapel Trustee and Concert Series event organiser, Simon McLellan describes coordinating and executing the series as hugely gratifying.

“The Colours of Futuna Series is an event people look forward to each year and when you pull together a combination of extremely talented musicians in such an atmospheric and historic building the result is pretty intense”.

Setting the tone for the 2025 series, Krackerjack gave an electrifying performance of Polish and klezmer tunes.  Composer and teacher Gary Wilby followed with an emotive piano performance while Zoe Li and Jeff Lin enchanted listeners with their melodic synergies.

The Winds and Strings quintet delighted their audience with a stunning blend of classical virtuosity juxtaposed by the spirited Klezmer Rebs who showcased their vibrant rhythms.  Michelle Velvin’s artistry on the harp was mesmerising, leaving an lasting impression, and Hala’s artistic performance was intimate and soulful.

Ghost Trio and Downing St Trio added their own special flair to a mix of classical performances before the series culminated on 15 June with the majestic sounds of Baroque Voices.

Futuna Chapel is renowned for its acoustic integrity and once again proved to be an ideal setting for the concert series.

“The Chapel serves not only as the physical space for the concerts but also as a symbolic link between art, community, and tradition. Performers and audiences alike remark on how the Chapel’s acoustics elevate the music”, says Simon.

“We are extremely grateful to Wellington City Council for their pivotal role in funding the concert series. Their support has been instrumental in bringing together such a talented lineup of performers and allowing the vision of Colours of Futuna to come to life”.

While the curtain has fallen on this year’s series, the Futuna Chapel Trust are now looking forward to planning the lineup for 2026.
