The impact of your gift will restore Futuna’s Future
Over the past six and a half decades, Futuna Chapel has withstood harsh elements.
The restoration project will replace the failing roof tiles with Laminam tiles that replicate, yet are significantly superior to, the original fibre cement and asbestos tiles used in 1961. Architect Dr Peter Parkes, along with Heritage structural engineer Win Clark, has designed the fixing system for these new tiles. The tiles will flex under seismic, wind and thermal forces.
Additionally, the acrylic windows, which cast unique patterns of coloured daylight, will be restored. The restoration works by the Futuna Chapel Trust demonstrate a shared commitment to preserving one of NZ’s architectural crown jewels and its cultural heritage and upholding spiritual, architectural, and artistic excellence.
Your generosity will make a difference to the generations of people who will visit or use Futuna Chapel, over the next 100+ years.
As John Scott described in 1973:
“When you come away from a building and feel excited because of something that you had going on within you, while you were within the building, then I think you are getting pretty close to architecture.”
Of Wool Sheds, Houses and People, Article by Robin Dudding, Islands 5 vol.2 No. 3, Spring 1973.
Kevin McCloud shares his passion for John Scott’s architecture at Futuna Chapel and describes the critical importance of conservation of this architectural masterpiece for future generations.
Ko tō tātou tāonga te kōura Futuna,
ka whakakākahuria anō ki tōna korowai whakahou,
hei tiaki mō ngā uri whakatipu i ngā hau kino o te wā.Our precious jewel Futuna,
is to be cloaked once more in its refurbished korowai,
protecting it for future generations from the harsh winds of time.
